Parent Update

Happy Friday Pilgrim Parents!

I would like to thank all of you for your patience and understanding this week with the safety concerns and testing. It is reassuring to know that our safety procedures and safeguards are working and firmly in place. Just to remind you about our continued daily security measures we have had in place over the last two years, from 7-8 AM we only have both main entrance doors (east and west) open for our students and from 8-4 PM only the entrance on Plymouth Ave. (flag pole) will be open. Safety of our students will always be our #1 priority. Here are some other events taking place:

SATURDAY SCHOOL:

The first quarter Saturday School will be Saturday (tomorrow) October 14 from 8 AM-12 Noon. Students with 6 or more tardies in a class and have lost credit in that class have the option to work off 1-2 tardies and earn that credit back. One tardy equals 2 hours. If they fail to attend Saturday School they will have to take a credit recovery class next semester to earn back that credit.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER:

October is National Bully Prevention Month

The first question: Is it bullying?

Rude vs Mean Vs Bullying

  • Rude = Inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else.

  • Mean = Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or maybe twice).

  • Bullying = Intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.

Experts agree that bullying entails three key elements: an intent to harm, a power imbalance and repeated acts or threats of aggressive behavior. Kids who bully, say or do something intentionally hurtful to others and they keep doing it, with no sense of regret or remorse — even when targets of bullying show or express their hurt or tell the aggressors to stop.

It is important to distinguish between rude, mean and bullying so that teachers, school administrators, police, youth workers, parents and kids all know what to pay attention to and when to intervene.
